Dee-Y's "Pull-Off" Takes Over Niger Delta Streets

By Perekeme Odon

In the Dancehall and Reggae industries everyday there are new/budding artists, otherwise known as reggae singers and dancehall acts trying to get a break into the music scene.

Ajangbadi, Lagos state born youthful Ijaw dancehall singer and explosive "singjay” Dee-Y (real name Preye Briabebe) is one of that kind, and first caught our attention through various dancehall shows in the Niger Delta some few years back.

According to Dee-Y, “if you are to get a break (a buss as we say) it's really hard. Most young artistes have to pay radio personalities huge sums of money for their records to be played on his/her show”; but that is not the trouble with Dee-Y, because his latest single “Pull-Off”,produced by Anicks Amos has just found its way towards the street to the enthusiasm of music lovers in Bayelsa, Rivers ,Delta, Imo and Akwa Ibom states respectively through an Alaba mixed tape produced by Emerald Music.
The Education Management graduate of the Niger Delta University (NDU) has written songs and performed with great artistes like the Blackface, Baba Sempe, Duncan Mighty, Frank D’Nero, RuffHouse Crew, Jah Wonder, Timaya, Daddy Showkey, Keffi, Zule Zoo, Danfo Drivers etc in Bayelsa state and Nigeria.

Dee-Y, organizer of the yearly 'KOLGA Music Festival' started singing in 1994 and dropped his first single titled “Bluff in Return” in 2006. That gave him a massive recognition and a look in by major music promoters. His mentors are Beenie Man, Mr. Vegas, I-Octane and many more. He said I-Octane is one of the most conscious young reggae artistes in the business today.I admire his lyrics and style of singing.”.

The Amassoma/ Oyobu-KOLGA son of Bayelsa state is the last son of four boys and two girls of Chief Stanley Briabebe aka Baba Ijaw.  His dream is to drop a dancehall video by first quarter of next year, and also arrange collaborations with the likes of Timaya, Patoranking, Cynthia Morgan and Tiwa Savage.
